Thank you for your kind words, Mr. President. I was glad to accept your invitation and I am still glad I did, even if I now again realise the truth of the dictum that there is no free lunch, in this case no free New Year party. I would not say ‘in cauda venenum’ about the remarks and questions at the end of your very interesting speech, but you do put some challenging remarks and questions to me. And I will try and answer them.

Beste Dames en Heren,
Ik ben blij hier vanavond te mogen spreken op de uitreiking van de prijs Trends/Tendance manager van het jaar. Hier vanavond zijn is belangrijker dan in een normaal jaar. Dit om twee redenen: 2009 was een zeer moeilijk jaar voor ondernemers en managers gegeven de tumultueuze omgevingsfactoren. Daarnaast staan we aan het begin van een jaar waarin het sociaal-economische opnieuw centraal staat. We moeten er in het komende jaar alles aan doen om het voorzichtige herstel te consolideren.

Mr President,Distinguished Members of Parliaments,Ladies en Gentemen,I would like to start by telling you a story, heard from an EU Commission official. It is a real life story, about a Chinese young man who lived in a backward village in the Hunan province and wanted to better his life. So he decided to go to Africa. He knew next to nothing about that continent. He had been told that Africa was poor. And he thought: so was China poor and now it is getting rich. So Africa can become rich too.
