HKH Prinses Mathilde, Beste collega’s, dames en heren, het is voor mij een waar genoegen en een hele eer dat ik u vandaag namens de OESO en eveneens als Belgisch burger en gewezen eerste minister van dit fascinerende land toespreek. Financiële educatie is zowel binnen de financiële hervorming als in het leven van onze medeburgers een belangrijke en actuele kwestie. Het staat vandaag buiten kijf dat financiële educatie belangrijk is voor België.

Mesdames et Messieurs les Ministres, Mesdames, Messieurs, Nos Perspectives économiques laissent entrevoir un ralentissement de la croissance. Le chômage dans la zone OCDE reste élevé. Les inégalités se sont aggravées au cours des 30 dernières années. Ces trois enjeux – croissance, emploi et inégalités – sont intrinsèquement liés. La session de cet après-midi nous donne l’occasion de les examiner en contexte et de rechercher des solutions.

Ladies and Gentlemen,A long time ago, when the United States of America were still young, there was an exhortation to young people: Go west, young man, go west. At that time, there were still enormous open spaces to be conquered and settled and developed.Today, I’d like to say to young Europeans: go east, young lady or young man, go east. Go east, not to conquer and settle and develop large open spaces, but to watch what is happening there.
